GMO Foods Are Safe and WHY

I am a Dietetics student and I often receive the questions “are GMO Foods Safe” and “Why?” Growing up on a farm and being familiar with many farm practices, including organic and convention, I am comfortable with this topic. I rely on my knowledge and reliable research to answer these questions that so many consumers have! So here we go… I kept it as short as possible! Short and sweet for you!

Everyone eats, but not everyone seeks to know exactly what they are eating. There are a lot of questions to ask about what consumers consume. A consumer may think about ingredients, processes used, origin, etc.

So while everyone eats, not everyone is aware of genetically modified foods. Are genetically modified foods safe to eat? According to the research, yes! There are various reasons why genetically modified foods are safe to eat. Genetically modified foods are safe and should be available for consumers because the FDA assesses genetically modified foods before they enter the market, can aid in feeding more people on fewer resources and gives Americans faith in the future.

In the United States, products are regulated. FDA (Food and Drug Administration) guidelines are strict. As of today, the FDA has publically found any negative health effects correlating with genetically modified foods. Some individuals worry that these modified foods were introduced and available for consumers too soon. This worry is just without more information. The FDA assesses genetically modified foods before they enter the market. Food from GM plants is regulated and the FDA assesses the safety of the foods and food products. Foods from genetically engineered plants intended to be grown in the United States have been thoroughly evaluated. The FDA does this through a consultation process and the foods have not gone on the market until the FDA’s questions about the safety of such products have been resolved.
